Lower Poulza Post Farm at Jacobstow, near Bude enjoys a rural position towards the end of a no through road. Doug and Zoe writing in the latest edition of Naturist Life (No 132) describe their favorite sandy beach for bathing au naturel in North Wales. Porth Ceiriad faces south on the Mynydd Cilan headland, not far from Abersoch, and is reached by a footpath which ‘weaves its way down to the sea’. According to Doug, “It’s bounded east and west by high rocky headlands and backed by sheer cliff”. He suggests going round the spit of rock on the shore, where there is 300 yards of usually deserted sand to enjoy.

On the north-west coast of Berneray, in the Outer Hebrides and connected to North Uist by a causeway, is the location of a remote three-mile white sand beach with few visitors. It featured in a guide to some of the best places to swim in Britain, by Kate Rew and Margaret Drabble and published in the Guardian Weekend magazine - 24 May ‘08. According to Kate, “Clothes are off and I streak down the beach taking lungfuls of clear pure air”. Diving into the sea, she continues, “Unimpeded by clothes the water spirals past armpits, chest-bone and legs in a continual thread. It’s the whole sea and me.” She concludes by recommending it as an ideal spot for nude bathing.

Following the success of last year’s event, details of the planned events for Nudefest2008 have now been announced. Staged by British Naturism for members and non-members, it takes place a short distance from Newquay in Cornwall 19 - 22 June 2008. Newperran Holiday Park - a 25-acre, 400-pitch, usually-textile campsite - will once again become a naturist resort for the weekend. Details and booking: 0845-166 8407.

Daniel Start, writing in The Times, extols the pleasures of bare bathing in the River Dart, in Devon. “In a deep gorge far upstream of Newbridge, lying on the flat, hot rocks by a gurgling river, you are miles from anywhere.” He continues, “This is a place made for lazy picnics and sunny afternoons. With miles of river to choose from, and not a soul in sight…”

The most remote river pools are apparently midway between Newbridge and Dartmeet, on the moors above Buckfastleigh. From either village, follow the river path through the woods for at least two miles.

Following the huge success of the naturist evening at the Eden Project, Cornwall in 2007, naturists in the north of England are staging their own event at Tropical World at Roundhay Park, Leeds later this year. The date set is Saturday 20 September ‘08, from 7pm - 10pm. Admission is a very reasonable £9, but early bookings attract a £2 discount (reducing the price to just £7)! With a tropical rainforest, a desert zone and butterfly house to explore, the buzz suggests this will prove to be an equally popular event. Don’t leave it too late get hold of tickets.

UPDATE: The ban on nude bathing at Penhale Sands has been has been overturned and naturists are once again welcome to enjoy the beach.

The beach has recently been at the centre of press speculation concerning its future as a naturist location. The national organisation British Naturism has received a letter from the Defence Estates, which own part of the beach, advising that naturists are to be banned from MOD land. The letter suggests that the local parish council who control the other part will do the same. We understand BN proposes sending a robust response indicating that such a ban has no foundation in law and that banning naturists would not solve the alleged problem of inappropriate behaviour by individuals unconnected with the many genuine naturists who enjoy the beach.

The beach has a history of naturist use stretching back more than 40 years and British Naturism is now suggesting working with all parties to have it made official. Watch for more information as it becomes available.

Country Cottages, one of the largest British-based holiday home agencies catering for the main-stream textile market, has just taken the welcome step of introducing naturist-friendly properties to its portfolio.

Jason has been in touch to advise he and his partner were disappointed when they tried to arrange to attend a swimsuits-optional ‘Natural Choice’ session in one of the Aqua Sanas at Centre Parks. Apparently the company has decided to discontinue the bare bathing facility at the moment. Perhaps if there are sufficient requests from customers wanting to bathe in ‘traditional fashion’ the policy will be reversed.

Naturists in southern England are concerned about the status of Eastney nude beach at Portsmouth in Hampshire. Described in the Bare Britain guide as ‘easily accessible’ and ‘officially recognised by the local council’; its future is threatened by a proposed high-rise development of 131 luxury apartments directly adjacent to and overlooking the naturist area. The local paper, the Portsmouth News recently reported on the concerns regarding continued use of the beach - add your own comments to the article to show support.

Handy for Gatwick airport, Little Oaks Sun Club at Copthorne is a new proprietary naturist club set in 7.5 acres of woodland and offering a heated covered swimming pool and a selection of sports courts. Access for cars, caravans and motorhomes is described as good and visitors are welcome by prior arrangement.

John, who for the last few years has helped with running the rustic camp site know as ‘Glyn’s Field’, close to Morfa Dyffryn nude beach, has been in touch. He will be well know to the regulars and has kindly provided the latest local news. Following Glyn’s death last year, his son Dennis and wife Sue have taken over, and from 2008 the site will be known as Pentre Mawr Camping. John advised that whilst still a simple site, there are up to 8 portaloos available. He also mentioned it is licensed for campers with tents, but motorhomes can stay if they have a small tent to pitch alongside (no caravans). Contact via Pentre Mawr B&B website.

Also, new for 2008, nearby Benar Beach campsite will have an enlarged naturist area to cater for increased demand. It should be noted that the nudist area will still be surrounded by high stone walls, restricting some of the fine views. Tel: 01341 247001 / 245571.

Andy and Kathy Eke have opened the Acorns Naturist Retreat at Creacombe Parsonage Farm, near Tiverton, in the heart of the Devon countryside. Bed and breakfast, self-catering mobile homes and camping are all on offer at the attractive 13-acre site mid-way between Exmoor and Dartmoor. A truly back-to-nature experience, with stunning views across the countryside. Home-grown or locally sourced food is used whenever possible. The location is handy for the north and south coasts, which offer a choice of bare beaches.

Mike Carter has been in touch to advise that from October 2007 the popular naturist swims at Prested Hall will be held from 6pm-9pm on the 2nd and 4th Sundays each month (not Saturday). And from May to September the times will be an hour later from 7pm-10pm.
